Weekly Comix Review ~ Rud Edition

Despite what Mike says, a shambling horror of an undead blog is better than no blog at all.

Also, God hates Mike and doesn’t want him to be happy. It gives me a sort of wicked glee to disturb him, so here’s a review of this week’s comics.

This week, we’ll be looking at GeNeXt, Nova, the Secret Invasion event, and Young X-Men.

GeNeXt has a title that employs the worst choice of lettering ever. This isn’t acceptable. I understand that Chris Claremont wants us to know that this is the Next Generation of X-Men, but for god’s sake! There’s no need to pretend he’s 13 years old and has just discovered the glories of Instant Messaging.

Despite that, Claremont continues his tradition of excellent writing. This story has continued to hold interest. I was a little skeptical about this story at first, since I’m not familiar with any of the characters and the story follows X-Men: The End, which was enjoyable, but not outstanding. I should really know by now that I shouldn’t judge a book before I’ve read it.

Especially when I decide to buy it on a lark.

Young X-Men had a big story revelation. Apparently Cyclops isn’t just a dick, like many people thought. I got into New X-Men right near the end of that series, when they made a huge deal about how this is the last generation of X-Men, ever, period, end of story. Luckily, they didn’t add too many new members of the dying Mutant race. Ink and Wolf Cub are the only new characters. Ink’s powers are kind of interesting: if he has a tattoo that symbolizes an effect, he gains that effect as a power. Sort of like if Peter Petrelli had a limit to the number of abilities he can absorb.

The Secret Invasion continued.  The storyline didn’t reveal anything massive, but it was a good read.  What really interested me was the Frontline story for this event.  The Frontline series are told from the perspective of two reporters, Ben Urich and Sally Floyd, who bear witness to major events of Earth-616.  Those little touches make these stories fantastic.  As the Skrull warships come into view over New York, Ben Uruch muses that he didn’t tell his wife that he loves her before he left the house.  Suddenly, the most important thing in the world is to let his wife know that he loves her.  The premise reminds me of Kurt Buseik and Alex Ross’ Marvels: the worm’s-eye view of a world where gods and giants walk the land.  Definitely worth taking a look at.

Finally, we have Nova.  I love Nova.  He’s stranded on a dying world, as Galactus devours it around him.  Something major and disastrous happens to Richard Ryder in this past issue.  No spoilers, but it made my day that much dimmer.

Well, folks, that’s it for this last week.  Next time, we’ll talk about X-Force (with the return of Archangel), Conan the Cimmerian, and Moon Knight.
