Brawlin’

As many of you know, this past Sunday was the release date for the latest iteration of Nintendo’s unique fighter franchise, Super Smash BrothersBrawl lives up to much of the hype of the past year.  The game itself is gorgeous.  The new Final Smash moves are dazzling.  And, of course, it is always fun to try out new characters.

First off, the character set has been expanded.  Every fighter does this when a new game comes out, but Nintendo has an advantage in this area.  Since these characters all appeared in past games, they have a built-in fan base.  Many people are as excited to play Pit or Solid Snake as are excited just to play the new version of the game.  I highly enjoy the concept of the Pokemon Trainer as a way to bring in many different characters without cluttering up the selection screen.  Unfortunately, some of these new characters seem poorly balanced.  When compared to the returning characters, Pit, for example, is extremely strong and quick.  Furthermore, he has the ability to fly for short times.  These characters may, however, only seem overpowered due to their novelty.  Hopefully, once players grow used to them, they will be as easy to overcome as any of the more familiar opponents.

Final Smashes were added to this game.  These super special moves are attainable at random points throughout battles.  While these are visually spectacular, I personally feel that they don’t balance well in this game.  Some characters, such as Lucas or Zelda/Shiek have wide-area and long-range attacks, while others have closer, melee based moves.  The longer-range moves have a much better chance of hitting multiple opponents, with the added bonus of keeping the player well away from danger.  Also, any single move that can KO an opponent who has yet to be touched does not strike me as fair.

My last complaint relates to the mechanics of the game.   The control scheme feels a little sluggish, especially after the last game.  Every player I have asked has said the same thing: response time is just a little too slow.  My only thought is that perhaps this has something to do with the choice of controller.  We all used our Game Cube controllers.  I’m hoping that the slow controller response has something to do with balancing the Wiimote control scheme.  That will be one of the next things I test, whilst unlocking the rest of the cast.

Despite all this whining, the game is still a masterpiece.   This game is exciting, and I can’t wait for the return of the days when up to 7 young men gather in a basement just to watch Nintendo characters beat the snot out of each other.

  1. I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

The Brawl Tourney and Gamestop pre-release was dominiated by Pit users. In a tourney where people were getting used to the controls, the ability to fly-jump 3-4x and then UP+B Fly for another 3seconds was just too hard to beat out. (In hind sight. Choosing Wario for kicks wasn’t a good idea when you get random’d onto the DK-Waterfall-Scrollieup level against a Pit user. In related news:Jessica got farther then I did in the tourny ><)

IE:Marth. Already a strong force in tourny’s for his speed and knockbacks, lets give him a one hit final. Where Kirby/Metaknights finals barely toss someone 5ft. Oh but hey, the kirby one makes food too, am i right?!. (PS Going to test to see if the more stuff kirby puts in the pot the more damage it does. It makes sense to me atleast)

Yea I’ve found controls to be a little sluggish, but after crank starting the ‘ol brain we thought the same thing about Melee when it came out. After playing a game for several years if the controls aren’t the exact timing that we’re used to we automaticly think it’s a case of the BADS. After playing Brawl for a couple more weeks you’ll be like, “What sluggishness?”

As happy as I am with character selection, both old and new. I kinda wish they’d stay away from the clones a bit. While they removed many of the near useless ones, IE:Pi-chu, Dr. Mario. They replaced them with more clones. See:Wolf, Lucas. Ironicly as it were. I actually like some of the clones more then the original though. I liked Dr.Mario more then Mario/Luigi. He was just a better juggler. And in Brawl I like Lucas alot more then I’ve ever liked Ness. (I’m sorry if you’re using a yo-yo for a weapon I better be playing Star Tropics)

I really like the “Adventure Mode”. Something I always wanted out of Smash was a more in-depth single player. I know it was meant to be Multi-player goodness, but you can’t stop me from wishing! And what do they say about be careful what you wish for? Now not that I’m complaining but judging from the amount of time I’ve put into it with the amount of % it’s says I’ve completed. It looks to be about 15-20hours long depending. It’s definately not something you sit down and go “I think I’ll clear and Adventure mode real fast” Thankfully classic mode is still there for that.

And to make a long post longer, Music/Levels. The composers did an outstanding job revitalizing the music and having it play well with the level. And the levels are innovative compared to the last set we had. Alot of them leave the “What the Hell!?” expression. IE:Fish from the IceClimbers level. First time i got to the bottom of that level a big freakin fish jump’d up gulp’d me up ending my game a little prematurely . But it’s stuff like that which makes the game refreshing. I still miss the ship level in the OG version of smash where if you knocked someone into the capitans quaters a pokemon would smash them out of it.

Anywho, long reply is long. ^^

  3. Chimpo yer such a nerd but i guess i have no right saying anything due to the fact that i lost sleep on all sat night and sunday for that purely addicting game >_<

  4. Oh, sweet Christ.

I stayed up until entirely too late last night playing the Adventure Mode (after writing this review, naturally).

Very long, interesting, and engrossing. Chimp’s right: this is something that the franchise has been sorely lacking, before this point.

  5. Went to bed at 1a.m. last night (anyone that knows me that’s way too late). Adventure mode completed with an 81%. Rud if you’re Co-oping it, be weary of the last guy. He has a move where he emits 3 beams that I can only avoid using a Poketrainer mechanic. (one that prollie wasn’t its intention. Hit me up later on AIM I’ll explain. It’s alot like the Secret of Mana mechanic in a way. (Antidote Invisability you haven’t failed me in 15years)

  6. Oh, man! Secret of Mana is one of my top 3 RPGs. Mori(Humbles) and I recently went down a detour from Memory Lane, and it led straight to the Mana Beast.
Cian just finished Story Mode last night, with only minor “help” from me. Really, I felt like I was just stealing his lives, most of the time, so I went back to grading papers.

I should do a Secret of Mana review.

  7. RPG tricks I learned in SoM I’m still finding uses for in modern gaming. It is a pure classic and an essence of what ActionCombatRPG’s should be(i just made that term up just now >.>)

In SoM on the mana beast fight. In order to avoid the damage when he does the TopGun fly by. The only way I could avoid the damage was to cast an antidote spell on myself right when he’s flying by me. If you haven’t “mastered” that school of magic it doesn’t stop the game. Also when the antidote animation in occuring you take no damage.

I used this tactic with the PokeTrainer. When he did his “I have technobutterflywingsofdeath” move I’d just tag pokemon out. I’d avoid all the rays and damage and still keep my dear, dear Squirtle.

There’s more but i’ll spare you the details in this post. I was actually thinking about SoM again this morning and how modern day RPG’s just cant compare to the old school ones. I can’t pinpoint what it is they’re doing differntly but i’ll sit on this some more till i can figure it out.

  8. [...] Lost Odyssey, Secret of Mana, video games I’m going to make a new post in response to a conversation with Chimp, because this subject is near and dear to my [...]
