An Old Hope: In New Packaging
Hey, Becky? How do I make words sound like Fanfare?
That would require far more onomatopoeia than I am currently skilled in. Perhaps we should just stick with the standard “ta da”?
But I really, really like the fanfare when Buttercup gets introduced in The Princess Bride. Why the hell can’t we have the trumpets blaring out like that?
Because it is 2007, and lame MIDIs playing when you open a webpage is SO 1996. Why can’t you just tell people to imagine the fanfare like when Buttercup gets introduced?
Fair enough. HEY! You out there in the Audience! Remember the fanfare when Buttercup gets introduced in The Princess Bride? Yeah. The horns and shit. Play that in your head for a second, while we start.
Perhaps we should tell them why we’re here. Though they might be distracted by the fanfare, it’s rather loud.
Okay! Audience! Cut the sound! No more trumpets. We’re here for a Purpose. A Reason. A… nother thing.
Good god, that’s a lot of capitalized words. I’m kind of intimidated. That was rather British Lit of you. Um…kay. This is a blog. We write things and then you read them.
The things we write will be many and varied. Mostly, we’ll pretend to talk about comics. We can call it “Graphic Literature” if that makes you feel more high-brow.
The term is “Sequential Art”. Duh.
Dude. I read Scott McCloud’s book. I know that. But you don’t go to Borders and see the “Sequential Art” section, now, do you?
That is because Borders is for old people and noobs.
My first date was at a Borders!
Exactly my point, sir.
Are we alienating the audience again?
Meh. They’re on the internet. They’re alienated enough as it is. There is nothing more we can do for them, only show them the light in this bleak series of tubes.
Fair enough. Well, we might as well start a rant, I guess.
Yes, indeed. For you see, dear audience, that is what you will find in these intangible pages. Rants aplenty, as well as weekly features and other fun things that you won’t be able to open your browser without checking on.
Rant 1: Man-Bat. Fuck that guy.

I feel a bit intimidated even participating, as I am one of “those” people who thus far has only admired Sequential Art (or whatever the euphemism of the moment might be) from afar. However, since I spend my days in an environment of significantly altered reality (read: I teach high school!), I hope I might be allowed to sit on your Capitalized Sidelines, listen to your fanfare, and interject a comment now and then…(no ranting though. I get enough of that from my minions/er, students.)
As a humble contribution, may I suggest an addition to your reading lists? “The World Without Us”, by Alan Weisman. Not Sequential Art, and I’m not sure what section it’s in at Borders…but it’s a fascinating thought experiment on what would happen to our world if humans suddenly…evaporated. Bottom line: everything we think is Important and Significant…crumbles. Except Plastics. Which is WAY scary.
